Guidelines for the promotion and implementation of gender equality and women’s empowerment
Abstract
NA 159-01-30 AA "Guidelines for Gender Equality" has decided to adopt ISO 53800 "Guidelines for the promotion and implementation of gender equality and the empowerment of women" nationally. Germany was actively involved in the development of ISO 53800 at international level. The international guideline contains an understanding of gender equality that differs in some respects from the German opinion (e.g. with regard to the gender binary). At international level, an intensive discussion was held with the various country representatives. The content of ISO 53800 is a compromise at international level. However, NA 159-01-30 AA recognizes the importance of the document. The document helps organizations both in this country and across countries to provide a framework to strengthen equality within themselves. During the process of adopting the ISO 53800 document into a DIN ISO 53800, the committee will review the content for conformity with German law and opinion and provide national guidance as required. This document gives guidance on how to promote and implement gender equality and women’s empowerment. It provides guidelines for organizations to develop the capabilities to achieve a culture of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The guidelines include the framework, resources, policies, tools and good practices enabling contextualization, promotion and implementation of gender equality. This document focuses on the inequality resulting from the gender specific roles assigned to women, girls, men and boys and is applicable to all types of organizations (public or private) regardless of their size, location and field of activity. Although the existence of more than two genders is recognized, this document focuses on the inequalities between women and men or girls and boys that result from the hierarchical organization of gender in society. This is because these have a significant structural character at a societal level. This document does not address the specific aspects of relations with labour unions or work councils, country-specific compliance and regulations relating to gender diversity.
