Electrical insulation systems - Procedures for thermal evaluation - Part 42: Specific requirements for evaluation of an electrical insulation system (EIS) used for road transportation applications
Abstract
The IEC 61857 series specifies test procedures for the thermal evaluation and qualification of electrical insulation systems (EIS). In general, this series is applicable to existing or proposed EIS used in electrotechnical products with an input voltage of up to 1 000 V where the thermal factor is the dominating ageing stress. In the context of this standard the limit of 1 000 V is understood to be the application specific battery DC voltage. This part of IEC 61857 gives guidelines for the evaluation of EIS used for road transportation applications and their specific requirements (e.g. chemical resistance due to the presence of cooling liquids, higher vibration levels, different temperature requirements). This standard is applicable to EIS used in electrotechnical drivetrain products for road transportation applications. The test is established for general-purpose models (GPM) or simple models (such as partial segments of a motor stator), all the way to full stator designs and takes into account specific winding configurations such as round wire (random windings) and rectangular wire (e.g. hairpin). In each case these models are appropriate for designs for partial discharge free insulation systems (an applicable definition of partial discharge free systems is given in IEC 60034-18-41).
