Secondary cells and batteries for renewable energy storage - General requirements and methods of test - Part 2: On-grid applications (IEC 21/1166/CDV:2023); German and English version EN 61427-2:2015/prA1:2023
Abstract
Grid-connected storage systems serve as energy sources and sinks in an electricity grid and can stabilize it. This standard is the result of the revision of the previous DIN EN 61427:2006-03 and now applies exclusively to grid-connected applications, while a Part 1 has been developed for off-grid applications. This Part 2 relates to rechargeable batteries for storing electrical energy in grid-connected applications and contains typical test methods for verifying the electrical operating behavior and durability of the battery. It applies to all battery chemistries, including lithium-based systems. This standard does not define any requirements for a battery system, but provides test methods for comparing storage systems with each other. The aim of this part of IEC 61427 is therefore to provide the future system operator with advice and guidance on the determination and selection of suitable rechargeable batteries for grid-connected electrical storage systems (EES). The associated power converters and interface devices to connect the storage system to the energy grid are not part of this standard. However, an informal list of hazards associated with batteries and battery systems is included in this part of IEC 61427. This list should support the assessment of the possible behavior of the battery under abnormal and abusive operating conditions.
