Road vehicles - Testing the abrasion resistance of automotive glazing with the windscreen wiper test (ISO 5685:2022)
Abstract
The surfaces of vehicle glazing are usually subject to abrasive wear. This is caused by different mechanisms, for example the impact of small particles (e.g. sand), the application of washing brushes, window wipers or ice scrapers, or in case of movable windows operation with dirt attached. In order to assess the abrasion resistance of glazing surfaces with regard to these different mechanisms occurring in practice, corresponding different test procedures are required. In addition to the abrasive-wheel procedure (Taber Test) used for many years in abrasion testing of vehicle glazing, the sand-drop test and the newer car-wash test, a procedure is now standardised which simulates the abrasion caused by the window wipers. This is significant especially for the assessment of windscreens but also for other panes.
