Characterization of solids - Quality assurance and quality control - Re-transferability of measurement results of the test characteristics with regard to their distinctness and distribution in the population
Abstract
Results gained from analyzing solids are conditioned by numerous factors. The resilience of results depends on the state of alteration and representativeness of the tested data and how it mirrors the population of the sampled solids. A broad expertise is needed to choose the right method that fits the specific assignment at hand when gathering and evaluating data. This document gives basic, statistically founded guidance on a broad range of fields of application with the aim to secure representativeness of samples during the sampling process and to help control the quality of the process itself. This document aims to create awareness of problems, so statistically founded uncertainties can be taken into account accordingly while presenting and interpreting results. It provides basic interdisciplinary guidelines for a large variety of tasks in analyzing solids. These guidelines include especially advice on preserving distribution of characteristics while proceeding from field-sample to test portion and on quality control of measurement results regarding their representativeness. The quality of those results mainly depends on the quality of the transfer of inspection characteristics into the corresponding subset and finally into the test portion. This document is suitable to recognize and if possible to minimize loss of inspection characteristic carriers on the way from sampling to measurement results and to verify the measurement results given in the test report regarding their resilience and relevance in accordance with the specific requirements of the task.
