Non-destructive testing - Pulse thermography using optical excitation
Zerstörungsfreie Prüfung - Impulsthermografie mit optischer Anregung
Overview
This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 062-08-27 AA "Visuelle und thermographische Prüfung" ("Visual and thermographic methods") at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP). This document specifies the performance of impulse thermography with optical excitation for the purpose of actual state analysis. These tests serve - the detection of defects and other irregularities; - the determination of geometries/forms parallel to the measuring surface; - to determine the coverage of defects and layer thicknesses; - the determination of thermal material properties. Pulse thermography with optical excitation is used for this purpose using flash lamps or a sufficiently powerful LED or laser source. In the case of materials with low thermal diffusivity, impulse-type heat sources with longer heating times can also be used for heating. Areas of application for pulse thermography with optical excitation can be found in industrial production (composite materials, vehicle, engine and power plant components, joining technology, generative production, electronic components, etcetera) and in maintenance (aerospace, power plants, supply engineering, construction, etcetera). The method is only suitable to a limited extent for testing materials with a very high proportion of pores (for example, insulating materials).
