DIN ISO 8728
Ships and marine technology - Marine gyro-compasses (ISO 8728:2014)

Title (German)

Schiffe und Meerestechnik - Kreiselkompasse für die Seeschifffahrt (ISO 8728:2014)

Overview

The latest version of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea of 1974, known as "SOLAS 74" for short, applies to maritime safety. In Chapter V (Safety of Navigation), a gyrocompass or an equivalent device for determining and displaying the course is required for every ship with a gross tonnage of 500 GT or more. A gyrocompass shall meet certain minimum requirements, which are defined in the ISO 8728 standard. This had to be revised because heading indicators and therefore also gyrocompass systems are required to communicate with the automatic bridge alert management system (BAM) via a defined data interface. The requirements and tests necessary for the required communication were added. As the standard is also cited in German legal provisions, a German translation (DIN ISO) is required. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 132-03-10 AA "Navigation" ("Navigation") at DIN Standards Committee Shipbuilding and Marine Technology (NSMT).
