Overview
The part of IEC 62840 presented here is applicable to battery swap systems for electric vehicles. The purpose of a battery changing system is to re-power electric vehicles by quickly replacing some or all of their removable traction batteries. Charging an electric vehicle typically takes an extended period of time, whereas the battery replacement process takes only a few minutes. In addition to wired AC and DC charging and wireless energy transfer (for example, inductive charging), battery replacement is another possible variant for supplying energy to electric vehicles. This Part 1 of the IEC 62840 series serves to define general requirements for a battery swap system for electric vehicles. In terms of the IEC systems approach, this part describes the architecture of battery swap systems as well as the interfaces of the subsystems. The informative annexes show application cases and examples of solutions. This standard thus provides a basis for the development of proprietary battery swap systems. Specifications of interfaces and dimensions of battery packs required for interoperable battery swap systems across manufacturers will be made in possible future parts of the IEC 62840 series of standards or other series of standards. Since there are various ways to charge the batteries after they are removed from the vehicle, inadequate power grid infrastructure has little impact on this process. In a battery swap station one or more of the following functions can be provided: - battery pack replacement; - battery pack storage; - battery pack charging and cooling; - battery pack testing, maintenance and safety management. The responsible committee is DKE/K 353 "Elektrostraßenfahrzeuge" ("Electric road vehicles") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
