Chirurgische Implantate - Aktive implantierbare medizinische Geräte - Teil 3: Implantierbare Neurostimulatoren (ISO 14708-3:2017); Deutsche Fassung EN ISO 14708-3:2022
Overview
Implantable neurostimulators use electricity to stimulate the nervous system. They produce controlled electrical pulses that are delivered through electrodes in contact with a specific target area. Regardless of whether the neurostimulator is completely or partially implanted, the required stimulation pulses are usually generated by a pulse generator and transmitted to the electrodes via electrode leads or extensions - newer designs of devices do not require electrodes or extensions. An external programmer might be used to adjust device parameters. Currently, several types of neurostimulators exist for treating the central or peripheral nervous system. This part of ISO 14708 applies to implantable or partially implantable neurostimulators regardless of the treatment therapy. Neurostimulators are used after accidents, for example, to improve the patient's quality of life. The responsible committee is DKE/GUK 812.5 "Aktiv betriebene Implantate" ("Active implantable medical devices") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
