DIN EN 1839
Determination of the explosion limits and the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) for flammable gases and vapours; German version EN 1839:2017
Bestimmung der Explosionsgrenzen von Gasen und Dämpfen und Bestimmung der Sauerstoffgrenzkonzentration (SGK) für brennbare Gase und Dämpfe; Deutsche Fassung EN 1839:2017
Overview
This European Standard specifies two methods for determining the explosion limits of gases, vapors and their mixtures when mixed with air and for determining the limiting oxygen concentration for flammable gases and vapors. Instead of air, an air/inert gas mixture (oxygen content < 21 % by volume) can also be used as an oxidizer. In this European Standard, the term "air" includes such air/inert mixtures. This European Standard applies to gases, vapours and their mixtures at atmospheric pressure for temperatures up to 200 °C. It is a summary of the previous standards DIN EN 1839:2012-12 and DIN EN 14756:2007-02. As a test standard it is primarily directed at test institutes engaged with the determination of explosion limits. This European Standard deals in particular with aspects of product safety. It has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 2014/34/EU for equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The responsible committee for this standard is NA 095-02-09 AA "Kenngrößen für Stäube, Gase und Dämpfe" ("Test methods for determining the flammability characteristics of substances") at DIN Standards Committee Safety Design Principles (NASG).
