Determination of certain substances in electrotechnical products - Part 6: Polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in polymers by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) (IEC 62321-6:2015); German version EN 62321-6:2015

Title (German)

Verfahren zur Bestimmung von bestimmten Substanzen in Produkten der Elektrotechnik - Teil 6: Polybromierte Biphenyl- und Diphenylether in Polymeren durch Gaschromatographie-Massenspektrometrie (GC-MS) (IEC 62321-6:2015); Deutsche Fassung EN 62321-6:2015

Overview

This International Standard describes the technical implementation of the determination of - polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and - polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in polymers of electrotechnical products by means of the measuring method gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC MS). This measurement method is suitable for the determination of mono- to decabrominated biphenyls and of mono- to decabrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and is considered the reference method for this type of measurement. Two other methods are described in the Annex: - Ion Attachment Mass Spectroscopy (IAMS) coupled with direct injection (DIP) and - High Pressure Liquid Chromatography coupled with ultraviolet photodiode array detection (HPLC-UV). These have application as rapid qualitative or semi-quantitative methods, but have limitations such as interference or the number or type of PBB and PBDE components in their targeting. The test methods were evaluated for application to high-impact polystyrene (PS-HI) and PC/ABS (a mixture of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). These contain individual PBDEs between 20 mg/kg and 2 000 mg/kg and have a total PBDE content between 1 300 mg/kg and 5 000 mg/kg. The responsible committee is DKE/K 135 "Erfassung von Stoffen in Produkten der Elektrotechnik" ("Determination of substances in products of the electrotechnical industry") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
