DIN EN ISO 8623
Tall-oil fatty acids for paints and varnishes - Test methods and characteristic values (ISO 8623:2015); German version EN ISO 8623:2015

Title (German)

Tallöl-Fettsäuren für Beschichtungsstoffe - Prüfung und Kennwerte (ISO 8623:2015); Deutsche Fassung EN ISO 8623:2015

Overview

The standard specifies test methods and gives information on characteristic values for distilled tall-oil fatty acids for paints and varnishes. Normally, requirements are agreed between the interested parties. So this new edition of DIN EN ISO 8623 no longer specifies requirements but only test methods and gives information on characteristic values for tall-oil fatty acids. The method for the determination of the unsaponifiable matter (diethyl ether method) from the 1980 edition of ISO 150:1980 has been taken over by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemicals (IUPAC), Standard methods for the Oils and Fats Section (OFS), Fifth edition. It corresponds to the procedure previously specified in DIN 55934:1982-11, 14.3, and ISO 150: 1980. The guideline values for the fatty acid composition of tall oil fatty acids given in the previous German standard DIN 55961:1993-03 are not contained in ISO 8623 and have therefore been included in National Annex NA (informative) to DIN EN ISO 8623. It was refrained from including requirements for the proportion of certain fatty acids, however, since there is still too little experience on this. For example, it is intended to limit the 9,12,15-linolenic acid content to less than 1 % to limit the tendency to yellow. If this appears necessary - for example due to test results - special agreements can be made on this. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 002-00-02 AA "Lackrohstoffe" ("Raw materials for paints and varnishes") at DIN.
