Information and documentation - Requirements for the long-term management of persistent identifiers

Title (German)

Information und Dokumentation - Anforderungen an die langfristige Handhabung persistenter Identifikatoren (Persistent Identifier)

Overview

For permanent citeability of digital objects, location-independent, persistent references are necessary which allow for reliable identification and addressing beyond technical and organizational changes. These requirements are fulfilled by Persistent Identifiers (PIs). A PI is a worldwide unique name used for persistent identification of addressable objects, such as documents, images, recordings, animations and metadescriptions. Long-term availability of digital objects is a critical success factor for permanent access. Sustainable interpretation and availability is guaranteed by storage of the digital objects in trustworthy long-term archives. PIs have one central function in this context: to permanently identify digital objects and to reliably make them available to the user beyond system boundaries and changes.
