Flag shackles; Text in German and English
Flaggenschäkel; Text Deutsch und Englisch
Overview
Signal flags allow quick and simple communication at sea. In the navy, they serve information transmission from ship to ship. Therefore, change of information, for example, a command, to the next one means taking down the flag, changing the flag and setting up the changed signal flag. It is therefore not permanently connected with the hauling rope, but via so-called flag shackles which allow for a quick change of the flag without using tools. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 132-01-05 AA "Heben, Schleppen, Ankern" ("Heaving, towing, anchoring") of the Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Standards Committee (NSMT).
