Overview
The European/International Standard has been prepared by CEN/TC 121/SC 9 "Health and safety in welding and allied processes", the secretariat of which is held by DIN, in collaboration with ISO/TC 44/SC 9 "Health and safety". The responsible German standardization committee is Working Committee NA 092-00-09 AA "Arbeits- und Gesundheitsschutz beim Schweißen und verwandte Verfahren" ("Health and safety in welding and allied processes") at NAS.
The standard specifies procedures for obtaining information about thermal degradation products generated when welding, cutting through, preheating and straightening metal treated with coatings composed wholly or partly of organic substances, for example, shop primers, paints, adhesives, sealants, oils, etcetera. It is aimed primarily at test laboratories performing such tests. The data generated can be used by product manufacturers to provide information for inclusion in safety data sheets and by occupational hygienists to identify thermal degradation products of significance in the performance of risk assessments and/or workplace exposure measurements. The data cannot be used to estimate workplace exposure directly. This standard differs from DIN ISO/TS 15011-5:2006-06 as follows:
a) the standard has been adopted as an International Standard;
b) the title has been changed;
c) in clause 3 "Terms and definitions" the terms "shop primer", "thin organic coating" and "weld-through oils" have been included and the former "welding primer" has been deleted;
d) clause 5 (Procedure) has been shortened;
e) Annexes A, B, C, D, E and G have been revised and figures have been added;
f) Annex F (Examples of suitable test conditions for arc welding) has been deleted;
g) resistance welding has been deleted from Annex B.
