DIN 18065
Stairs in buildings - Terminology, measuring rules, main dimensions

Title (German)

Gebäudetreppen - Begriffe, Messregeln, Hauptmaße

Overview

This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 005-09-86 AA "Treppen" ("Stairs"). This new edition improves the statements of the previous standard DIN 18065:2000-01 and makes it more user-friendly. Within the framework of the revision the standard has also been fundamentally restructured. Clauses 6 "Main dimensions", 7 "Tolerances" and normative Annex "Figures" have been written in two-column tabular form in order to emphasize more clearly the differences in the comparison of "Buildings in general" and "Residential buildings with up to two flats and within flats" which has therefore become possible. Text or figures which apply for both columns have been arranged over columns without dividing lines. The terms have been revised, amongst others, for example, the term tread (3.13) has been further subdivided into circular stair (3.13.1) and straight stair (3.13.2). For the limit dimensions (finished dimensions in the final state), Figure 1 and Figure 2 (previously Table 1 and Table 2), the maximum and minimum values are specified for stair angle and stair tread. Differentiation is only made between stairs which, according to building law, are necessary and which are not necessary. NABau Committee ("Stairs") has consistently worked towards preparing the standard such that it can be incorporated into the Musterliste der technischen Baubestimmungen (sample list of technical construction regulations) and can be introduced in every country as a technical construction regulation by building authorities. This standard specifies the terminology, measuring rules, main dimensions and tolerances for stairs in building construction. Whereas the terminology and measuring rules generally apply for building construction, the specifications for main dimensions and tolerances only apply for stairs in and on buildings as far as no special regulations exist which contain specifications and requirements for stairs which deviate from this standard. Therefore, this standard specifically refers to the 16 Landesbauordnungen (LBO) (state building regulations) which have been amended on the basis of the MBO. Adherence to the specifications in this standard assures that the basic requirements relating to stairs (legislator) are met. This concerns safe accessibility of the stairs in the normal case of daily use as well as safe use of the stairs as part of the escape routes in case of a fire. The standard applies, independent of the building material, for stairs made of any building material and their combinations and for any type of construction, for example, for "stairs with load-bearing bolts" according to DIN 18069. The standard particularly does not apply for other special fields, for example, shipbuilding or machine building as diverting statements can be made in standards dealing with these special fields. It does not apply for stairs according to DIN EN ISO 14122-3 "Safety of machinery - Permanent means of access to machinery - Part 3: Stairs, stepladders and guard-rails", as it does not regulate stairs used in building. This standard does not apply for retractable stairs (see DIN EN 14975) and not for escalators/moving staircases and not for flights of outdoor stairs.
