Overview
Ecotoxicity tests can be applied for waste to identify its potential environmentally hazardous properties or to estimate the risk resulting from a site-specific exposition scenario. This document provides guidance for the selection and use of ecotoxicity tests for both applications. The emphases of this document are put on the following selected application areas: a) basic ecotoxicological characterization; b) site-specific exposition scenario; c) landfill management - monitoring of seepage water; - mineral waste deposited on unsupervised landfills; d) reuse of waste - agricultural reuse of sludge; - reuse of mineral waste in road building. The user should be aware that further fields of application which are outside the scope of this document can also be covered by applying ecotoxicity tests. The ecotoxicological assessment of waste within further scenarios can necessitate the development of further testing strategies. The relevant criteria for the selection of a testing strategy and the suitable ecotoxicity test(s) are described in relation to the type of waste and the purpose of evaluation. This document also provides guidance with regard to individual ecotoxicological test methods (for example, with regard to limitations, the test concept or disturbing factors), to meet specific requirements of the waste test. The recommended tests represent a minimum test battery which can be supplemented by additional test methods or replaced by other test methods in accordance with the waste, intended use and the targeted protection objective. This document is the German version of Technical Report CEN/TR 16110:2110 which has been prepared by Technical Committee TC 292 "Characterization of waste" (secretariat: NEN, Netherlands) of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The preliminary work was carried out by CEN/TC 292, Working Group 7 "Ecotoxicological properties". The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 119-01-02-04 UA "Biologische Verfahren" ("Biological methods") at DIN.
