Overview
The Technical Specification CEN/TS 16229 has been prepared by WG 8 "Wastes from the extractive industry" of CEN/TC 292 "Characterization of waste" within the framework of mandate M/395 of the European Commission/EFTA. Regarding German collaboration, NA 119-01-02-02 UA "Chemische und physikalische Verfahren" ("Chemical and physical processes") has been involved in the preparation of the standard. The application of the document is essentially limited to the currently still active European gold mines which apply the cyanide leaching process for extraction of the low gold contents from the ore. The resulting considerable high amounts of tailings, usually slurry, are discharged into ponds after treatment with, for example, hydrogen peroxide or sulphur dioxide to destroy cyanides. Prior to discharge, the concentration of the weak acid dissociable is analyzed in the slurry. This document describes the sampling and sample pre-treatment prior to analysis. The actual measurement is carried out either in accordance with the robust method to ISO 6703-2 or flow analytically to DIN EN ISO 14403 which is suitable for higher sample throughputs, however.
