Overview
This Technical Specification shall be used together with EN 61643-11:2002. Low voltage surge protective devices (SPDs) are used under defined conditions for the protection of electrical installations and equipment at different voltages and current pulses, such as lightning surges and switching surges. SPDs shall be chosen according to their conditions of use. Thereby, the allowed failure rate of SPDs and the devices to be protected is to be observed. This Technical Specification contains information: - characteristic values for the user which are useful for the correct choice of SPDs; - to estimate the necessity of the employment of SPDs in low-voltage distribution networks in accordance with the methods described in the standards EN 62305-1 to EN 62305-4 and HD 384/60364 (series); - for the choice and coordination of SPDs, whereby the entire operating environment of the employed SPDs shall be taken into account. Examples are the equipment to be protected, the system characteristics, the insulation level, the type of surge, the method of installation, the location of the SPDs, the coordination of the SPDs, the types of errors of SPDs and the consequences of a failure of the equipment to be protected; - as a guideline for carrying out a risk analysis. This Technical Specification describes the principles for selection, operation, location and coordination of SPDs connected to 50 Hz to 60 Hz AC power circuits and equipment rated up to 1 000 V (r.m.s.). This Technical Specification only deals with SPDs in electrical equipment in buildings. Low-voltage surge protective devices built into equipment are not considered. To maintain a self-contained useable document, parts from existing documents have been inserted where necessary. These parts are mentioned specially in the text and the reader is informed that these parts could be changed in the future. The responsible committee is Subcommittee UK 441.1 "Überspannungsableiter bis 1 000 V" ("Surge arresters up to and including 1 000 V") of the DKE German
