DIN EN 14397-1
Fertilizers and liming materials - Determination of carbon dioxide - Part 1: Method for solid fertilizers; German version EN 14397-1:2010
Düngemittel und Calcium-/Magnesium-Bodenverbesserungsmittel - Bestimmung von Kohlenstoffdioxid - Teil 1: Verfahren für feste Düngemittel; Deutsche Fassung EN 14397-1:2010
Overview
This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of carbon dioxide in solid fertilizers. The carbon dioxide is liberated by treatment with phosphoric acid and absorbed in a solution of barium hydroxide. Barium carbonate precipitates and the excess barium hydroxide is back-titrated with hydrochloric acid. The method applies to all fertilizers that contain carbonates and/or bicarbonates. If the fertilizer contains any other substances that release carbon dioxide on treatment with phosphoric acid, this will also be determined and expressed as carbon dioxide. The method was initially published as a pre-standard (DIN CEN/TS 14397-1) without providing precision data. DIN CEN/TS 14397-1 has been adopted as a European Standard under the Unique Acceptance Procedure (UAP) after the re-examination and addition of precision data. The document has been prepared by CEN/TC 260 "Fertilizers and liming materials" (secretariat: DIN) under the mandate M/335 given to CEN by the European Commission to validate the test methods specified in Annex IV of Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003 relating to fertilizers, adapt them to the state of the art and to publish them as European Standards.
