MaaSAI

Agile Manufacturing as a Service through AI Autonomous Agents

MaaSAI Logo

The aim of the project is to develop the MaaSAI system, a comprehensive digital system, which automates and simplifies the interactions between suppliers of manufacturing systems (providers) and production companies (consumers) in a Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS-) ecosystem. This should be done flexibly, efficiently, and transparently.

The MaaSAI system aims to revolutionise manufacturing and remanufacturing processes by facilitating access to flexible and decentralised capacities via the MaaS business model. It applies the principles of a service-orientated economy to the manufacturing industry. The MaaSIA system aims to reduce the heavy investments that manufacturers have traditionally had to make to set up and maintain their operations. With a focus on production flexibility, agility and responsiveness, the MaaSAI system enables an on-demand, sustainable manufacturing. This optimizes resource utilization, facilitates the transition to circular facilities and promotes better integration into the value chain.

The MaaSAI project uses „Explainable Artificial Intelligence“ (xAI) in autonomous agents to negotiate utilisation of production capacities between suppliers and consumers in a dynamic MaaS ecosystem. The integration of secure and real-time data exchange between the companies involved ensures fast response times and improves collaboration. The MaaSAI system represents a paradigm shift that enables manufacturers to access and utilise production capacities in line with demand. This increases efficiency and lowers the barriers to entry for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The MaaSAI project will produce three main actionable outputs:

  1. MaaSAI Cloud MaaS Marketplace;
  2. MaaSAI Provider Suite;
  3. MaaSAI Consumer Suite.

The MaaSAI system will be demonstrated in five pilot projects of European companies from different sectors: Metalworking, Gear and Mechanical Power Transmission, Biomaterials, Food Processing and Electronics Manufacturing.

DIN is responsible for the overarching standardization activities in the project. This initially includes the preparation of an overview of research-relevant standards, the identification of standardization potentials together with the project partners, and the development of a subsequent standardization strategy in consultation with relevant standardization committees. The implementation of the strategy can include the development of a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) by the consortium partners and other interested experts, a long-term exchange with and/or a contribution to the activities of relevant standardization committees, or other transfer measures.
