KupferDigital2

Material data room for increasing the efficiency and sustainability of the copper life cycle

The KupferDigital2 project researches and tests digital tools for interoperable data exchange in supplier and customer relationships and establishes them using an example production chain for the copper industry.

As a central element for electrical and electronic applications, copper is a strategically relevant material. The life cycle of copper alloys includes many stages from the production of the material through to the product and recycling. A wide variety of data is collected along this value chain, which is crucial for understanding material properties and product quality, but access to such data is made difficult by heterogeneous data systems, multiple intermediate steps and non-interoperable formats. In addition, the data collection is often not coherently documented and therefore the data is often not efficiently reusable. Against this backdrop, the project evaluates the life cycles and value chains to subsequently examine and digitalize aspects of material science in product development.

Standards play a special role in this project, as they enable knowledge transfer, ensure interoperability and increase user acceptance. The aim is to develop a digital infrastructure for the data of material sciences. To achieve this goal, standardization is used to systematize and standardize the handling of such data.

Hereby, DIN is responsible for the overarching coordination of standardization activities and related stakeholders in order to develop a uniform solution, particularly in relation to ontologies. Cooperation on material issues between science  and industry in Germany can only succeed in the long term through common standards and formats across all processing levels. In addition to networking with standardization committees, DIN also supports the project by preparing an overview of relevant standards and by supporting the transfer of  project results into standardization activities, e.g. by developing and publishing a national specification (e.g. DIN SPEC) based on the results of KupferDigital2.
