WindNODE
A window to intelligent energy in Northeast Germany.
The primary aim of WindNODE is to use digital technologies to ensure grid stability in the face of fluctuating supply from renewable energy sources such as wind energy.
This project focusses on using digital technologies to ensure grid stability even when there is fluctuating supply from renewable energy sources such as wind energy. The plan to extend the power grid foresees a number of new power lines to transfer excess energy elsewhere. However, there are other ways of adjusting the supply from renewable energy plants, as is often required to compensate for shortcomings in the grid. Using potentials for flexibility at the local level is a promising approach. Industrial consumers, for example, should adjust their load at the place where overcapacity occurs. Further measures requiring examination are the use of storage and integrated energy to achieve a balance by diverting excess electricity so it can be used for heating or mobility. The intelligence of tomorrow’s power grid will be based on intelligent measuring systems pioneered by the roll-out of “smart meters”.
WindNODE is a collaboration of some 50 companies, research organizations and universities working together with numerous associated partners. In an extensive, real-life laboratory, they are developing innovative products and services for the mass market and for export.
DIN and DKE will support the standardization activities of WindNODE to lay the foundations for a digitized energy industry using electricity in Europe from renewable sources.
