DIN Standards Committee Shipbuilding and Marine Technology

Overview

Uniform terminology is essential for oil spill response. To this end, the International Standard ISO 16165 "Ships and marine Technology - Marine environment protection - Terminology relating to oil spill response", German title "Schiffe und Meerestechnik - Schutz der Meeresumwelt - Bekämpfung von Ölverschmutzungen, Begriffe und Definitionen", was published in 2001. This standard had to be revised because it no longer reflected the state of the art. Many of the terms and definitions listed have been in use for many years, while others are the result of more recent experience. Successive developments in understanding the behaviour of oil spills and corresponding countermeasures meant that the related terminology would continue to evolve. The revision has been carried out by WG 3 "Environmental Response" of ISO/TC 8/SC 3 "Marine Environment Protection" with intensive national participation. The German mirror committee is NA 132-02-11 AA "Schutz der Meeresumwelt" ("Marine environment protection"). The current edition of ISO 16165 was published in 2013. NA 132-02-11 AA has decided to prepare a German translation to facilitate communication for German users, for example in joint operations with users from abroad. In addition, the devices and equipment required for oil damage control are usually marked with the English terms. When applying this standard the safety-related and country-specific requirements and laws/regulations shall be observed. The standard DIN ISO 16165 "Ships and marine technology - Marine environment protection - Terminology relating to oil spill response" has been prepared by NA 132-02-11-02 AK "Ölwehrgeräte" ("Booms and skimmers").
