Manoeuvring is an essential safety function for a boat. Many electronic systems are used in this area. This standard is intended to assist designers and manufacturers of electric and electronic control systems, machine manufacturers and testing laboratories by specifying uniform requirements for the design, construction and testing of electrical/electronic control systems for steering, shift and throttle and dynamic position control systems. This standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide one means of conforming to Essential Requirements of the New Approach Directive 94/25/EC as amended by 2003/44/EC on recreational craft. It enables legal certainty for manufacturers and buyers of craft by the highest level of presumption of conformity compared to the related part of the legal requirements. This consolidated version includes Amendment 1 into which a modified wording regarding the "Free fall test" has been included. The modified wording restricts the applicability of the free fall test to non-rigidly mounted components of the system since the application of the free fall test is unrealistic in case of rigidly mounted components. The committee responsible for this standard is NA 132-08-01-05 AK "Motoren und Antriebssysteme (Sp ISO/TC 188/SC 2)" ("National committee for ISO/TC 188/SC 2 Engines and propulsion systems") at DIN.
