Small craft - Craft identification - Coding system - Amendment 1

Abstract

This document contains changes to the five characters of the hull identification number assigned by the manufacturer. The term "unique" as used in the published document creates a misunderstanding with some authorities', believing that the 5 characters within the CIN that are assigned by the craft manufacturer can only be used once in a lifetime. This is not the case, as many craft manufacturers reuse the 5 characters each model year. The entire CIN is unique based on the assigned MIC, the month/year of manufacture and model year of the craft, thus each CIN is not duplicated and is unique.
