DIN 25425-1
Radioisotope laboratories - Part 1: Rules for design

Title (German)

Radionuklidlaboratorien - Teil 1: Regeln für die Auslegung

Overview

The document contains rules for the design of radionuclide laboratories. Of the legal and employers' liability insurance association regulations to be observed, particular mention should be made of the provisions of the German Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV), the building regulations, the Workplace Ordinance, the accident prevention regulations and the Hazardous Substances Ordinance. In this document, rules for the construction of radionuclide laboratories and the functionally related special category spaces are compiled to serve as a guide for the planner, the builder, the operator, the expert and the authority. Facilities for activities involving open radioactive substances in radionuclide laboratories are mentioned in this document only to the extent that they shall already be taken into account in the design of the laboratory. Basic principles for the preparation of radiation protection rules are given in DIN 25425-4. This document applies to the design of radionuclide laboratories in which open radioactive substances are handled subject to licensing and to the design of functionally related special category spaces. Requirements resulting from the handling of enclosed radioactive substances are not the subject of this document. This document does not apply insofar as the exemption limits according to StrlSchV, Annex III, Table 1, Column 2, are fallen short of under consideration of the sum formula applied to open radioactive substances. The special regulation according to 6.3 applies for measuring equipment in which radioactive substances are inserted and may be in contact with the outside air, such as electron capture detectors with 63Ni. DIN 25422 applies for the requirements for storage facilities of radioactive substances. DIN 25420-1 and DIN 25420-2 as well as DIN 25420-1 Supplement 1 and Supplement 2 apply for the installation of hot cells. DIN 6844-1, DIN 6844-2 and DIN 6844-3 apply to the requirements for nuclear medical facilities for handling open radioactive substances for use on humans. Additional protective measures to prevent criticality shall be observed (see DIN 25403-1) when handling fissile materials. This document has been prepared by Working Committee NA 062-07-63 AA "Radionuklidlaboratorien" ("Radionuclide laboratories") at DIN Standards Committee Materials Testing (NMP).
