Textilien - Bewertung der Entzündbarkeit von Bettzeug - Teil 1: Zündquelle: glimmende Zigarette (ISO 12952-1:2010); Deutsche Fassung EN ISO 12952-1:2010

Overview

This document (EN ISO 12952-1:2010) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 248 "Textile and textile products", the secretariat of which is held by the BSI (United Kingdom), in collaboration with Technical Committee ISO/TC 38 "Textiles". The responsible German Committee is NA 062-05-43 AA "Brennverhalten von Textilien" ("Burning behaviour of textiles") of the Materials Testing Standards Committee (NMP) at DIN. DIN EN ISO 12952 consists of the following parts, under the general title "Textiles - Assessment of the ignitability of bedding items" - Part 1: Ignition source: smouldering cigarette - Part 2: Ignition source: match-flame equivalent With respect to DIN EN ISO 12952-1:1999-02 and DIN EN ISO 12952-2:1999-02, the following changes have been made: a) General (DIN EN ISO 12952-1) and specific test methods (DIN EN ISO 12952-2) have been combined; b) ISO 4880 and ISO 10528 have been added to the Normative references; c) ISO/IEC Guide 52 has been deleted from the Normative references. Fires are sometimes caused by the ignition of bedding items by smokers' materials. The ignitability of bedding items by a smouldering cigarette or a small open flame is therefore an important feature in the assessment of the risk of fire. It cannot be assumed that protection against a smouldering ignition source will automatically give protection against flaming ignition. Users of this standard should therefore submit test specimens to both cigarette and flaming ignition tests. ISO 12952-1 describes test methods with a smouldering cigarette as the ignition source. ISO 12952-2 contains the testing with a small open flame as the ignition source. This standard can be used for the assessment of ignitability of individual items of bedding and of composite arrangements. WARNING - This test relates only to the ignitability of materials under the particular conditions of testing. It is not intended as a means of assessing the full potential fire hazard of the bedding item in use. Particular attention is drawn to the possibility of ignition of lower parts of a bedding assembly when using bedding items which are not themselves ignited. Depending on the design of beds and mattresses, a reference to test and performance requirements other than those described in this part of ISO 12952 is necessary. This part of ISO 12952 specifies test methods for assessing the ignitability of bedding items when subjected to a smouldering cigarette. This part of ISO 12952 applies to bedding items, which can normally be placed on a mattress, for example: - mattress covers; - underlays; - incontinence sheets and pads; - sheets; - blankets; - electric blankets; - quilts (duvets) and covers; - pillows (whatever the filling) and bolsters; - pillowcases. This part of ISO 12952 does not apply to mattresses, bed bases and mattress pads. A test specimen is placed on a testing substrate and subjected to a smouldering cigarette placed on top of and/or below the test specimen. Any progressive smouldering and/or flaming is noted. Where the actual mattress used is known, it can replace the testing substrate.
