Quantum network best practices
Abstract
This document collects data and lists best practices in real implementations of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems in National context. This document provides insights, address technical challenges and influence standardization efforts. The scope of the data collection and analysis efforts, include among the others: − Identification of organizations, companies, and research institutions involved in implementing QKD systems and quantum-based communication networks; − Collection of information regarding the design, architecture, and deployment strategies employed in these systems; − Gathering data on the operational characteristics in real large-scale implementations, including key metrics such as transmission rates, error rates, and distance limitations; − Examination of the security protocols, cryptographic algorithms such as post-quantum cryptography (PQC), and key management processes successfully employed in QKD large scale networks; − Analysis of the scalability, interoperability, and integration challenges and standardization needs associated with quantum-based communication networks; − Exploration of the impact of environmental factors, such as temperature and noise eg in Satellite implementations, on the performance of QKD systems; − Investigation of the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of implementing QKD systems in various application domains; − Comparison of different QKD implementations, technologies, and approaches to identify strengths, limitations, and trade-offs
