Overview
The heating load calculation according to DIN EN 12831 represents a recognized and sufficiently accurate procedure for determining the room and building heating load. These calculations serve as the basis for the design of any heating system. In the case of plant engineering changes or the energy evaluation in existing buildings, the planner can often no longer fall back on such a calculation, especially at the room level. Depending on the situation and the data available, other simplified methods must then be used to determine the space heating load. This document presents such a method, which is based on the basic equations of DIN EN 12831. By introducing meaningful simplifications to the calculation procedure and tabulated auxiliary values for input variables, the user is enabled to determine an appropriate value for the heating load of a room with simple means and little effort. This document applies to rooms in existing buildings. It describes simplifications to the heating load calculation according to DIN EN 12831 for approximate determination of the room heating load. The method should only be used if no detailed building component data and area data of a room are available. The method can be used for rooms in residential or residential-like buildings without ventilation and air-conditioning systems. The results of the calculations can be used as a basis for radiator replacement, heating surface design or hydraulic balancing. For a simplified determination of the building heating load, the application of Supplement 2 of EN 12831 is recommended, since the calculation result can be achieved with greater accuracy.
