Paints and varnishes - Method for testing paint coatings for pores and cracks using high-voltage
Beschichtungsstoffe - Prüfung von Beschichtungen auf Poren und Risse mit Hochspannung
Overview
The test using high voltage according to this standard serves for the detection of the location and number of pores, cracks and other vulnerabilities in unexposed (for example, new) coatings. The test is only applicable to non-conductive coatings on electrically conductive basis materials. It shall be agreed if a DC voltage tester (method A) or a pulse voltage tester (voltage from short-time pulses: method B) is used. It can be agreed to apply the standard for exposed coatings. Particular test conditions shall then be specified. The test can also be carried out on coatings on mineral basic materials as long as sufficient conductivity is assured by residual moisture of the basic material or by a conductive intermediate layer. In order to check if this requirement is met the coating can be artificially damaged (pinhole), for example, and it can be established if this pore is visible when testing according to clause 10. The Committee responsible for this standard is NA 002-00-07 AA "Allgemeine Prüfverfahren für Beschichtungsstoffe und Beschichtungen" ("General test methods for coating materials and coatings") at DIN.
