DIN Standards Committee Water Practice

Overview

With DIN EN ISO 5667-3 "Water quality - Sampling - Preservation and handling of water samples" an overview of the preservation and fixation methods suitable and most common in routine analysis as well as of the general handling of water samples is provided for the fourth time. As already in the previous editions, the standards containing individual analysis of ISO/TC 147 "Water quality" form the basis of the information which will be supplemented by information, if necessary, when no standards containing individual analysis are available or in cases where information on preservation, etcetera, is missing. Other than in the previous editions, edition 2012 clearly specifies that the corresponding measures of the standards containing analysis shall be given priority and then ISO 5667-3 is taken into account. This clarification is very important from the point of view of the measures taken under the German Water Law as it would otherwise be necessary that in each individual case the legislator determines specifications in regulations that deviate from the preservation methods when referring to standards containing individual analysis. On the part of the legislator it is intended to take into account this current version in upcoming amendments. Although the new document already covers the biggest part of the investigations it would be helpful for laboratory practice if corresponding instructions for preservation contained in European Standards and German standards which do not result from the adoption from International Standards of the ISO could also be incorporated into such a survey standard. This was not yet possible in this case, corresponding preliminary work has already been carried out, however in order to provide this information in the foreseeable future. For application of this German version of ISO 5667-3 care must be taken that the each investigation parameters listed in Tables A.1 to A.3 of the Annex is based on the English original, for example carbon follows calcium. This only concerns a few parameters. The following modifications have been made with respect to DIN EN ISO 5667-3:2004-05 and DIN EN ISO 5667-3 Corrigendum 1:2006-08: a) title has been amended; b) the test has been technically adjusted to the modified specifications in standards containing individual analysis; c) the standard has been completely editorially revised. This document (EN ISO 5667-3:2012) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 147 "Water quality", in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 230 "Water Analysis", the secretariat of which is held by DIN (Germany). The responsible German committee is Working Group NA 119-01-03-01-01 AK "Probenahme" ("Sampling") of Working Committee NA 119-01-03 AA "Wasseruntersuchung" ("Water Analysis") at the Water Practice Standards Committee (NAW).
