Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems - Part 5: Image projectors (IEC 62471-5:2015); German version EN 62471-5:2015
Photobiologische Sicherheit von Lampen und Lampensystemen - Teil 5: Photobiologische Sicherheit von Lampensystemen für Bildprojektoren (IEC 62471-5:2015); Deutsche Fassung EN 62471-5:2015
Overview
Most lamps and lamp systems are safe and, except for unusual exposure conditions, do not pose a photobiological hazard. This is also true of optical image projectors, where experience shows that even high-powered cinema projectors are safe for short-term viewing and that optical hazards can be posed by them only under some circumstances at close distances or when direct long-term viewing is deliberate. The dynamic development of solid state and other lamps or lamp systems has led to new projector products and thus to the need for a photobiological safety standard for this application group of lamp systems. This standard defines requirements regarding the photobiological safety of optical radiation emitted by image projectors. This standard for photobiological safety does not address other hazards such as electrical, mechanical, or fire hazards. The scope of this standard covers laser-based projectors with encapsulated laser sources that generate the light used for the projection beam (image processing system), where the projector shall meet the radiance requirements for Class 1 according to IEC 60825-1, Edition 3. The responsible committee is Joint Committee DKE/GK 841 "Optische Strahlungssicherheit und Lasereinrichtungen" ("Optical radiation safety and laser equipment") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
