Dosing apparatus for the oral medication of powdery or liqiud proprietary medicinal products at farm livestock - Part 2: Dosing apparatus for liquid proprietary medicinal products for application by using drinking water
Dosiersysteme für die orale Verabreichung von pulverförmigen oder flüssigen Fertigarzneimitteln bei Nutztieren - Teil 2: Dosiersysteme für flüssige Fertigarzneimittel zur Verabreichung über Trinkwasser
Overview
In primary production application of animal pharmaceuticals for farm livestock by using drinking water plays a large role, as individual animal application (for instance, injection) is often not possible due to the size of livestock. On the farm of the livestock owner medicinal products permissible in drinking water are dosed using dosing apparatus for animal pharmaceuticals for oral application and added to the trough water. The oral application takes place in the form of completely liquid solutions. The standard is directed exclusively at the manufacturers of dosing apparatus for animal pharmaceuticals. It does not deal with the subsequent drinking system. In DIN 10529 requirements for the design and technical dimensioning of dosing apparatus for animal pharmaceuticals for oral application by using drinking water as well as test methods for checking the dosing accuracy of the devices and the homogeneity of the mixture of drinking water and medicinal product fed into the drinking system are specified. Both the dosing accuracy and the homogeneity are decisive criteria for proper medication of the livestocks. In this manner, dosing inaccuracy can result in the fact that, for instance in the case of underdosing, no therapeutic benefit is achieved. In the case of an overdose, residuals in foodstuffs of animal origin that exceed the specified maximum values can occur. Residual amounts in the devices and inadequate cleaning possibilities of the dosing apparatus can lead to spreading of pharmacologically-effective materials in subsequent batches and, if applicable, contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. With this standard the minimum requirements for dosing apparatus for liquid proprietary medicinal products for application by using drinking water shall be specified in order to allow for proper oral application of animal pharmaceuticals by way of dosing devices. The standard DIN 10529-2 has been prepared by Working Committee NA 057-02-01 AA "Lebensmittelhygiene" ("Food hygiene"), Working Group NA 057-02-01-24 AK "Dosiersysteme für Tierarzneimittel" ("Dosing apparatus for animal pharmaceuticals") at DIN.
