Overview

This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with these requirements. This European Standard deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant for chip and dust extraction systems for fixed installation and for connection with machines for working on solid wood (including hard wood), wood-based materials and wood-like materials, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer, including reasonably foreseeable misuse. This European Standard deals also with the technical requirements to minimize the hazards in connection with the temporary storage of wood dust, chips and shavings in a silo, bin or container including charging and discharge systems. This European standard does not apply to: a) chip and dust extraction systems with filters installed indoors (covered by prEN 16770); b) extraction equipment (such as extraction hoods, ducts) within a woodworking machine including the outlet to which the extraction system is connected; c) chip and dust extraction systems designed for KST values above 200 bar ms-1; d) mechanical conveying systems between filter and storage facility; e) extraction systems and conveying systems with underpressure below 0,3 bar or overpressure above 0,3 bar; f) storage devices for pressed wood products (such as pellets) and humid shavings. Requirements for containers are not dealt with in this standard. This European Standard is not applicable to machines which are manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. This standard contains the German version of EN 12779:2015 prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142 CEN/TC 142 "Woodworking machines - Safety" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 12779:2010-09 as follows: a) the scope of the standard has been completely revised as regards chip and dust extraction systems for fixed installation; b) Clause 2, updating of normative references to new editions of cited standards and inclusion of newly cited standards; c) Clause 3 "Terms, definitions, terminology, symbols and units" has been revised; d) in Clause 4, the list of significant hazards has been harmonized with EN 12100:2010; e) Subclause 5.2, revision and adaptation of texts to EN 13849-1:2008; f) parts of Subclause 5.2.1 have been revised and moved to Subclause 5.2.7; g) the former Subclause 5.2.3 has been deleted; h) a new Subclause 5.2.2 "Emergency stop" has been included; i) a new Subclause 5.2.3 "Failure of the power supply" has been included; j) the former Subclause 5.2.4 has been deleted; k) parts of Subclause 5.2.6 have been revised and moved to Subclause 5.2.3; l) the former Subclause 5.2.5 has been deleted; m) the cross-reference to 5.2.2 formerly given in Subclause 5.2.7 is now included in Subclause 5.2.1; n) Subclause 5.3 has been completely revised; o) Subclause 5.4 has been completely revised, some figures have been deleted, and the requirements for silos have been included in the new Subclause 5.8; p) the former Subclause 5.4.2 "Noise" has been completely revised, requirements have been included in the new Subclause 5.5, and additional requirements for noise sources, measures to reduce noise, and details regarding the impact from chips and dust have been specified in a new Annex D; q) the former Subclause 5.4.3 "Emission of chips, dust and gases" has been substantially revised and is now Subclause 5.6 "Protection against hazardous substances"; r) the former Subclause 5.5 "Electricity" has been completely revised and harmonized with current standards; the specifications are now included in a new Subclause 5.7; s) the former Subclause 5.6 "Ergonomics and handling" has been revised and is now included as Subclause 5.3.3 and Subclause 5.8.1; t) the former Subclause 5.7 "Lighting" has been deleted; u) the former Subclause 5.8 "Pneumatics" has been brought in line with current standards and is now Subclause 5.3.4; v) Subclauses 5.9 "Hydraulics", 5.10 "Vibration" and 5.11 "Laser" have been deleted; w) the former Subclause 5.12 "Static electricity" has been revised and is now Subclause 5.4.3.2.5; x) Subclause 5.13 "Errors of fitting" has been deleted; y) the former Subclause 5.14 "Isolation" has been revised and is now Subclause 5.7; z) the former Subclause 5.15 "Maintenance" has been revised and is now Subclause 6.3.4; aa) Clause 6 "Information for use" has been completely revised and restructured; bb) a new Annex A "Examples of extraction systems" has been added; cc) the former Annex A "Table with corresponding terms in English, French and German" has been revised and is now Annex B; dd) the former Annex B "Relationship between airflow, vacuum, air velocity and power" has been deleted; ee) the former Annex C "Verification of performance measurement" has been deleted; ff) a new Annex C "Classification of places where explosive atmospheres may occur (according to Directive 1999/92/EC)" has been included; gg) Annex D "Noise reduction at the design stage" has been revised; hh) the former Annex E "Air velocity and extraction hood design" has been deleted; ii) a new normative Annex E "Silos with a cross section up to 45m<(hoch)2" has been included; jj) a new Annex F "Measurement of residual dust content" has been added; kk) the former Annex ZB is now Annex ZA (informative) "Relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of EU Directive 2006/42/EC". The national interests during the preparation of this standard were represented by Committee NA 060-09-50 AA "Allgemeine Lufttechnik" ("General ventilation technology") of Technical Section "Equipments for making and shaping of metals" of the Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of woodworking machines and dust extraction systems, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of the standard.
