Safety of woodworking machines - Combined woodworking machines; German version EN 940:2009+A1:2012
Sicherheit von Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen - Kombinierte Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen; Deutsche Fassung EN 940:2009+A1:2012
Overview
This standard defines relevant requirements set out in Annex I of the EC Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, relating to machines which were placed on the European Economic Area (EEA) market for the first time, with the intent of simplifying the means of proving conformity with such requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, the manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This document specifies all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events as listed in clause 4 which are relevant to stationary and displaceable combined woodworking machines with two or more of only the following integrated units: * surface planing, * circular sawing (working simultaneously or not with vertical spindle moulding unit), * vertical spindle moulding, * boring [mortising] and * thickness planing hereinafter referred to as "machines", designed to cut solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood, and also these materials where they are covered with plastic laminates or edging or veneer, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer including reasonably foreseeable misuse. This document does not apply to: * combined machines which consist only of a surface planing unit and a thickness planing unit; * combined machines with a band saw unit; * transportable motor-operated electric combined tools, or any adaptation permitting their use in a different mode, that is bench mounting; * machines with mortising unit driven by a separate motor. Machines covered by this European Standard are listed under 5 of Annex IV of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. This document applies primarily for machines which have been manufactured after the date of its publication as EN. This standard contains the German version of EN 940:2009+A1:2012 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142 "Woodworking machines - Safety" of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The following significant modifications have been made with regard to DIN EN 940:2009-12: a) in clause 5 the requirements for safety-related parts for control systems have been revised in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1:2008 and Performance Levels (PLr) have been introduced; b) 5.2.1.2 and 5.2.1.3 have been deleted entirely; c) in 5.2.4 and 5.2.5 STO for an emergency stop and alternatively SS1 for a normal stop may be used for stopping the machine; d) in 5.4.3 additional requirements relating to the chip and dust extraction system have been included; e) in 6.3 additional requirements relating to the instruction handbook have been included in the standard; f) Annexes B and C have been deleted entirely. The national interests during the preparation were represented by Committee NA 060-06-01 AA "Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen - Sicherheit" ("Woodworking machines - Safety") at Technical Section "Woodworking machines" at the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of combined woodworking machines and of the employers' liability insurance associations contributed to this standard.
