DIN 18040-2
Construction of accessible buildings - Design principles - Part 2: Dwellings
Barrierefreies Bauen - Planungsgrundlagen - Teil 2: Wohnungen
Overview
The standard DIN 18040 consists of two parts, Part 1 "Publicly accessible buildings" and Part 2 "Dwellings". This part of the standard DIN 18040 cancels and replaces DIN 18025-1:1992-12 and DIN 18025-2:1992-12. The contents of both standards DIN 18025-1 and DIN 18025-2 have been fundamentally revised and restructured. Sensory requirements have been added. Protection objectives have been added, whereby as a rule the individual clauses each initially state the protection objectives to be reached. Then it is demonstrated how the protection objective can be reached. The aim of this standard is to design the built living environment so that it is accessible and enables as many people as possible to use it in a conventional way, without particular impediments and basically without help from others. It describes under which technical prerequisites buildings and structures are accessible. The standard takes into account the needs of persons with vision and hearing or motor impairments and persons using mobility aids and wheelchairs. Some requirements of this standard even lead to an improvement regarding application for other person groups, such as people of tall and small stature, persons with cognitive impairments, older people, children as well as persons with prams or luggage. Special attention was given to the involvement of persons affected and the implementation of their experience into installation requirements. This part of DIN 18040 applies to barrier-free planning, execution and equipment of flats, buildings with flats and their outdoor areas which are intended for development and home-related use. The requirements for infrastructure of the buildings with flats generally also take into account unrestricted use with a wheelchair. Within flats a differentiation is made between - barrier-free flats and - barrier-free and unrestricted wheelchair use. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 005-01-11 AA "Barrierefreies Bauen" ("Construction of accessible buildings") of NABau.
