DIN Standards Committee Mechanical Engineering

Overview

This standard contains specifications meeting the essential requirements set out in Annex I of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC which apply to machines that are first placed on the market in the European Economic Area (EEA) to facilitate proof of compliance with these requirements. Once this standard is designated a harmonized standard in the Official Journal of the European Communities, a manufacturer applying this standard may assume compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive (the so-called presumption of conformity). This European Standard specifies all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to all types of screw extruders for plastics and rubber. This European Standard additionally covers the following feeding systems: - hoppers; - single roller feed; - double roller feed; - crammer feeder; and the following ancillary equipment which form part of or are attached to the extruder: - screen changers; - melt/gear pumps; - melt pipes and adaptors; - static mixers; - extruder head that give initial shape to the extruded material. Metering devices are not covered by this standard. This European Standard does not deal with hazards caused by the processing of materials and which may lead to a risk of fire or release of health hazardous materials. An extruder conforming to this document is not regarded as a pressure vessel as defined in the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC. Extruders usually do not produce explosive atmospheres. Where materials are processed, which may cause an explosive atmosphere, the Directive 94/9/EC on equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres should be applied. Explosion hazards are not dealt with in this document. This European Standard contains the German version of EN 1114-:2011 which has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 145 "Plastics and rubber machines" at the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This standard differs from DIN EN 1114-1:1997-01 as follows: a) the main element of the title has been modified; b) the foreword has been updated; c) the introduction and clause 1 "Scope" have been updated; d) normative references in clause 2 and throughout the text have been updated; e) clause 3 has been revised; f) clause 4 has been revised and examples of danger areas have been deleted without any replacement; g) safety requirements and/or protective measures have been modified in clause 5 taking into account the technological changes in the plastics and rubber industry and the development of safety technology. This essentially includes taking into account the new standard for safety related parts of the machine control which affects all subclauses and especially the requirements and/or protective measures regarding excess pressure protection; h) the requirements and/or protective measures concerning electrical equipment have been specified in greater detail; i) a new clause relating to ergonomics has been added; j) clause 6 has been updated; k) clause 7 has been updated; l) normative Annex A 'Noise test code' has been included; m) informative Annex ZA on the relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of EU Directive 2006/42/EC has been updated; n) Annex 'Bibliography' has been included. During the preparation of the standard, the national interests were represented by Committee NA 060-14-03 AA "Extruder" ("Extruders") of Technical Section "Kunststoff- und Gummimaschinen" ("Plastics and rubber machines") of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee (NAM) at DIN. Representatives of manufacturers and users of extruders, as well as representatives of professional and trade associations were involved in the preparation of the standard.
