Overview
In EU member countries, regulations on genetically modified food and feed and on their traceability (Regulations (EC) No 1829/2003 and No 1830/2003) have been applicable since April 2004. They specify criteria for the labelling of food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). According to those food manufactured from GMOs must be approved and labelled as such. An exception is made for food containing adventitious or technically unavoidable proportions of GMO-material of less than 0,9 %. To check compliance with these labelling provisions, availability of validated methods of detection complying with the authorisation criteria and performance requirements as laid down in the detailed rules to the regulation on genetically modified food and feed (Regulation EC No 1981/2006) is essential. This International Standard specifies general guidelines and performance criteria for methods for the detection and/or quantification of specific proteins in a specified matrix. These general guidelines apply for existing antibody based methods. Methods other than those described in Annex A or Annex B can also detect proteins. The same criteria as outlined in this standard apply generally.
