Overview
For the determination of the concentration of blood corpuscles, venous, capillary or arterial blood is suitable. Venous blood is to be preferred due to the better reproducibility of the measurement results. Blood collection shall be performed with due diligence and in accordance with the site-specific guidelines for hygiene and disinfection. The cleaned and disinfected skin area shall have dried before blood is collected. Blood coagulations taking place outside of the body shall be prevented by immediate contact with an anticoagulant or by strong dilution (for instance, greater than 1:100) with an isotonic medium containing no divalent cations. In both procedures the blood sample or blood dilution shall be immediately mixed. This standard applies to blood collection for the determination of the concentration of blood corpuscles in human anticoagulated blood employing anticoagulation reagents or high dilution in a suitable isotonic solution. This standard has been prepared by Working Committee NA 063-03-06 AA "Hämatologie" ("Hematology") of the Medical Standards Committee (NAMed) at DIN the German Institute for Standardization e. V.
