Safe use of hydrogen in built constructions
Abstract
Scope of the proposed deliverable 'This document describes measures for a safe use of hydrogen in built constructions and gives the technical rationales and operational guidance for aspects listed below: Built constructions means buildings and/or other structure, for example houses, parking houses, tunnels, enclosed structures, steel containers. Aspects: - Prevention of occurrence, considering o Hydrogen properties o Safe design approach, including: Ventilation, both natural/forced ventilation, combined with gas dispersion patterns and cloud sizes Detection, location and density of detectors, type, intensity of detection (devices), both smoke and gas detection; Leakage aspects; Mapping of different materials and construction designs of the enclosure; o Operational aspects: Normal service mode vs. failure mode ; Adequate training of mechanics, inspectors, contractors, etc. - Limiting the effect of consequences o Fires Fire protection (risk analyses and appropriate measures) Influence of issues in the area of other energy types available, flammability of materials etc Fire at connecting buildings and spaces; Jet fire risk analyses and resulting safe designs (including leak, fire characteristics, design and protection needs) o Explosions Explosion risk analyses and resulting safe designs (including explosion phenomenon in a probabilistic framework) Influence of capacity for hydrogen (volume, pressure, conditions) in the confined space; Pressure peaking phenomena. - Emergency response in case of incidents (e.g. leakage, overpressure, fire, explosion) o Knowledge transfer o Firefighting emergency preparedness, etc; o Practices and drills The document will also include a list of relevant standards to benefit from existing requirements and facilitate the expected future change to these standards.
