DIN Standards Committee Optics and Precision Mechanics

Overview

DIN EN ISO 19980 specifies terms as well as - together with ISO 15004-1 - requirements for instruments, systems and methods for measuring the surface of the human cornea. They are typically applied for supporting ophthalmologic diagnosis or within the framework of contact lens fitting by the ophthalmologist or optician. In addition to the requirements for the instrument itself, the standard also lays down specifications with regard to the information to be supplied with the instrument and its marking. Ophthalmometers are excluded from the scope. The standard is primarily directed at manufacturers of corneal topographers. With respect to the previously valid edition (DIN EN ISO 19980:2005-11), a modification of the test surfaces for the type test has been made: two further test surfaces of a spherical shape have been added whereas the previously provided multicurves have been deleted. Furthermore, the colour pallet recommended for the expanded interval scale in standardized curvature maps has been modified. In addition to the aforementioned modified contents, the dated normative references have also been (editorially) updated. The standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 172/SC 7 "Ophthalmic optics and instruments", in collaboration with CEN/TC 170 "Ophthalmic optics" (both secretariats: DIN, Germany). At DIN, the responsible Working Committee is NA 027-01-098 AA "Augenoptik" ("Ophthalmic optics"), Working Group "Ophthalmische Instrumente" ("Ophthalmic instruments") at NAFuO.
