Overview
The International Standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 106/SC 3/WG 2 "Revision of ISO 1942" (secretariat: AFNOR, France), together with CEN/TC 55 "Dentistry" (secretariat: DIN). The responsible Committee at DIN is Working Committee 014-00-03 AA "Terminologie" ("Terminology") at NADENT.
The standard provides definitions for a number of concepts specific to dentistry in the interest of facilitating development and comprehension of standards, and to improve communication with the World Dental Federation (Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI)), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other interested organizations.
Concepts which are determined by terms and associated definitions, are incorporated into the standard if they
- are specific to dentistry;
- obtain a high level of consensus;
- are necessary for the development and/or understanding of more than one dental standardization document or for the development and/or understanding of conditions, instructions for use provided by the manufacturer, brochures;
- facilitate communications with other interested organizations.
Concepts which are determined by terms and associated definitions, are excluded from the scope of the standard if they
- are general concepts;
- include self-explanatory terms;
- are necessary for the development and/or understanding of only one dental standardization document.
The individual terms are represented in the following order:
1. preferred term (bold-face type, obligatory)
2. acronyms and abbreviations/shortened form (bold-face type, optional)
3. synonyms (light-face type, optional)
4. symbols (in italics, optional)
5. deprecated terms (light-face type, in brackets, optional)
6. associated definition (light-face type, in brackets, optional).
