Overview
When designing an electrotechnical product, the risk of fire and the potential hazards associated with fires shall be taken into account and minimized as far as possible by dimensioning components, designing the circuit and selecting materials. The basic principle is to prevent any ignition or, if necessary, to contain the spread of fire. Part -1-10 of the IEC 60695 series provides general guidance on fire risk assessment to ensure that fire risk and potential effects of fires can be reduced to acceptable levels. In this sense, Part -1-10 also serves as a guideline standard for the other guidance standards in the IEC 60695 series. Different types of fire tests are discussed, in particular the nature of qualitative and quantitative fire tests. The significance of the scenarios or approximations used in the assessment of the fire hazard is also explained in a qualified manner. This standard does not contain instructions for the use of compartments with fire-resistant boundaries or for the use of fire detection and extinguishing systems. The revised edition presented here updates requirements with regard to its new status as a basic safety standard. References to other parts of the series of standards and definitions of terms have also been brought up to date. The content of other clauses and the annexes have also been revised. This basic safety publication is intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. Application-specific integration of this basic safety standard is the responsibility of the relevant technical committee. The responsible committee is DKE/K 133 "Prüfverfahren und Beurteilung der Brandgefahr von elektronischen Produkten und Isolierstoffen" ("Fire hazard testing of electronic products and insulating material") of the DKE (German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) at DIN and VDE.
