Overview
This document has been prepared by NA 009-00-14 AA Working Committee "Bestandserhaltung in Archiven und Bibliotheken" ("Conservation in archives and libraries"). This standard has been adopted as a German Standard primarily because this will help increase awareness of the necessity for correctly packing library and archival materials for storage purposes, and because the technical requirements for implementing this must be generally defined. The packing of library and archival materials is not only an effective but also a relatively inexpensive means of conservation, certainly less expensive than measures for repairing damages later on, such as manual restoration. It is also a sustainable means of conservation, for although the packing materials are consumable materials, normally they must fulfil their protective function over years or even decades without breaking up into their individual components. And of course, the packing may not contain substances that are in themselves harmful to the library and archival materials.
