DIN EN ISO 14689-1
Geotechnical investigation and testing - Identification and classification of rock - Part 1: Identification and description (ISO 14689-1:2003); German version EN ISO 14689-1:2003
Geotechnische Erkundung und Untersuchung - Benennung, Beschreibung und Klassifizierung von Fels - Teil 1: Benennung und Beschreibung (ISO 14689-1:2003); Deutsche Fassung EN ISO 14689-1:2003
Overview
The standard has been prepared by ISO/TC 182/SC 1 "Geotechnical investigation and testing" (secretariat and chairmanship: Germany) in collaboration with CEN/TC 341 of the same name (secretariat and chairmanship: Germany). The responsible Committee at DIN is Working Committee NA 05-02-00 AA "Benennung, Beschreibung und Klassifizierung von Boden und Fels" ("Identification and classification of soil and rock") at NABau.
This part of the standard series ISO 14689 contains the identification and description of rock material and mass on the basis of mineralogical composition, genetic aspects, structure, grain size, discontinuities and other parameters. It also contains rules for the description of other characteristics as well as for their designation.
The standard applies to the description of rock for geotechnics. The description is carried out on cores and other samples of natural rock and on rock masses.
Rock mass classification systems using one ore more descriptive parameters to suggest likely rock mass behaviour are beyond the scope of this standard. Identification and classification of soil for engineering purposes are covered in ISO 14688-1 and ISO 14688-2.
