Requirements for the use of chain of custody models in Environmental Product Declarations for construction products

Abstract

The purpose of this document is to provide a framework for the use of chain of custody models for inputs and outputs and associated information. This includes material, energy and emission flows. The document describes the objectives and defines if and under which conditions chain of custody models (according to ISO 22095:2020) can be applied in the EPD of construction products. For those cases where a particular chain of custody model may be allowed, it sets requirements for the implementation in EPD; this is in the context of the assessment of environmental performance of construction products and construction works. Best practice and proven methods for the use of chain of custody models for inputs and outputs in other sectors are evaluated to understand how and if they may be applied to EPD of construction products and what effect this may have outside the construction sector. The TS covers how to avoid any double counting in the calculations of the LCA underlying an EPD and in the use of EPD at construction works level. It shall set requirements on the reporting, and transparent and clear communication of any use of chain of custody models in EPD according to EN 15804 and to EN 15941. The document sets requirements to ensure that reported data is credible, reliable, and transparent. The document provides rules to ensure consistency across EPD and specifies the conditions of comparison of EPD. The document applies to construction products and their use in construction works.
