Overview
This Technical Report specifies a method for determination of the film thickness of coatings on metallic and non-metallic substrates by using an ultrasonic gage. With respect to the method described, the individual film thicknesses are derived from the running times of ultrasonic impulses partially reflected on the surface areas of the coating system. Using the measurement data for different practice-relevant film-substrate combinations, the weaknesses and strengths of the method are indicated.
