DIN EN 15895
Cartridge operated hand-held tools - Safety requirements - Fixing and hard marking tools; German version EN 15895:2011

Title (German)

Kartuschenbetriebene handgehaltene Werkzeuge - Sicherheit - Befestigungs- und Markierwerkzeuge; Deutsche Fassung EN 15895:2011

Overview

This DIN EN standard specifies safety requirements and protective measures for cartridge operated fixing and hard marking tools which operate with a piston and which are intended for use with fasteners made from metal (for example, nails, eyelets or threaded studs). This European Standard is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100. Fixing tools are intended to drive fasteners into a base material. Hard marking tools are used to mark base materials (for example, letters and numerals). Hand-held tools for use with cartridges and with solid propellant and containing a minor quantity of primer with a composition different from that of the main propellant are standardized. However, requirements for the cartridges and fasteners to be used with the tools are not standardized here. In this standard, nine main groups of hazards are considered, namely hazards by: free flying fasteners at high velocity, ejection of fragments from the tool, cartridge casings or the collation system, or the base material, escaping combustion gases, noise, vibration and shocks, hot surfaces, neglecting ergonomic principles, as well as incorrect assembly or incorrect re-assembly of the tool. The requirements for safety derived from the individual hazards are specified in a detailed manner. Furthermore the test methods are standardized with the help of which compliance to each individual safety requirement can be verified. Additionally, requirements are specified in this standard for the information for use in regard to safe use of the tools. Various normative and informative annexes in the standard deal with the following topics: calculation of the maximum gas pressure in the cartridge chamber and determination of the muzzle velocity, verification of safe operation, noise test code and ergonomic design of the handle. This standard contains the German version of the European Standard prepared by CEN/TC 213 "Cartridge operated hand-held tools - Safety requirements", the secretariat of which is held by SNV (Switzerland). The responsible German mirror committee is Working Committee NA 121-05-02 AA "Bolzensetzwerkzeuge und Befestigungstechnik" ("Explosive-actuated tools and fixing technology") at FWS.
