Overview
This part deals with the protection of electrical installations against transient overvoltages due to atmospheric influences transmitted via the power supply network, including direct lightning strikes to the supply lines and transient overvoltages due to switching operations. The structure and layout have been revised compared to DIN VDE 0100-443 (VDE 0100-443):2007-06. The references and terminology have been adapted. New specifications are given for the control of overvoltages by surge protective devices (SPDs). The main changes compared with the predecessor standard are briefly explained below: a) In order to standardize the designations in the various sets of standards, surge protective devices (SPDs) will in future be designated by the acronym "SPD", which is derived from "Surge Protective Device". The complete designation is "surge protective device (SPD)". b) The scope of application now also includes direct lightning strikes in the supply lines. Protection against direct lightning strikes in the supply lines requires the installation of type 1 surge protective devices (SPDs). c) Structural installations with explosion risk, such as petrochemical plants and chemical plants, do not fall within the scope of DIN VDE 0100-443 (VDE 0100-443). d) Inclusion of a new clause Terms. e) The principle of system-specific control of overvoltages in installations supplied by a low-voltage network laid completely in the ground has been deleted without replacement. f) The decision criteria for when surge protective devices (SPDs) shall be installed in a system have been revised and expanded. g) A new simplified risk analysis in accordance with DIN EN 62305-2 (VDE 0185-305-2) has been included. The calculated risk level (CRL) has been newly introduced as a decision criterion for the installation of surge protective devices (SPDs). This procedure is not used in Germany. h) An overview for the required rated impulse voltages of equipment for overvoltage categories I to IV has been extended to include DC systems up to 1 500 V.
